follow your heart- heart's of haiti

This Mother's Day, I'm working with Clever Girls in support of Macy's Heart of Haiti to shine a light on the "trade, not aid" program, which provides sustainable income to Haitian artisans struggling to rebuild their lives and support their families after the 2010 earthquake.

Looking back at my journey as a mother stirs up a lot of emotions. Happy, sad, excitement. Happy because I love being a mother. Sad because my kids are growing way too fast, and excitement for the things to come.

You see, I become a mother at the young age of 19. I really didn't know what to expect. I was trying to figure out who I was as a person as well as battle all the hormones that comes along with pregnancy.

On October 14, 2006 my life changed forever and that moment when I looked at my son for the very first time I knew who I was meant to be. A mother. He has brought me so much joy and love unimaginable. He gave me a purpose here on this earth. Someone that I could pour all my love into and feel loved in return.  With being so young, it was a learning process for me and for him, and still is.
(Here he is only a few hours old)

My baby boy will always have a special place in my heart.
(Just a few months ago)

In 2009 my daughter was born. I was more mature but still young. Looking at my daughter for the first time  brought me so much happiness.

(here she is a few months ago being silly)

Being a mother is so rewarding, crazy at times and just all around melts your heart.
Beyond all the times that are hard, trying to figure out what is best for them with discipline, for their health and for their future...everything is worth it.
When they come up to me and tell me I'm a pretty mommy or that I'm their best friend, those times out- weigh the screaming and fighting over toys or the days where they need more time outs than any other day with me wanting to pull my hair out. They are worth the world to me and I can't wait to see what God has planned for their future and mine as a mommy.

Along my parenting journey I have learned that the other woman in my life play an important role.
My Mom, my Grandma and my Mother-in-law all play a special part with who I am today.
Without their strength, knowledge and advice I wouldn't be the Mother I am today.
I love them very much and appreciate everything they have done and will do for me!

So this Mother's Day, make sure you take time to make them feel special.
Store bought things aren't what make me the happiest. It's the little things like a hand picked weed or flower from my kids or a little scribble drawing meant just for me. So, do something that makes them feel loved or check out Macy's Heart of Haiti!
